Free Community Onsen- These onsen are maintained by community volunteers
for the local folks although everyone is welcome.  Look around a bit and you will find them.

Train or bus.

This is also a good destination to drive
especially of you are going mid week or
off season, otherwise use the public
transportation.  The baths, ski area,and
other attractions are mostly within a pleasant
walking distance of each other. There is also
some great hiking in the region.

Kusatsu (1200m) lies high on the slopes of Shirane San (2160m)   minutes
from Kusatsu Kokusai Ski Resort.  

In the center of this mountain villiage lies the
most prolific hot water spring in Japan gushing more than 5000 gallons of acidic
hot spring water per minute.

In Kusatsu the hot water is so plentiful the city uses it instead of salt to keep the
roads clear in the winter.
