| Accessibility is always a mixed blessing and Hakone can draw a crowd especially during the holidays so make your reservations early, however for travelers who desire solitude, never fear. Hakone has more than enough hidden and wild wonders. Hakone is easily accessed by express train from Tokyo. Once in Hakone, buses and taxi are abundant. Driving can also be fun but don't try it on a weekend or holiday. A great and inexpensive way to get around Hakone is the Hakone Freepass. The freepass allows unlimited travel on train,bus, boat, rope way, and cable car routes in and around the Hakone region and to and from major Odakyu stations. The freepass is also available on weekdays and an extended version that also covers the Mt. Fuji area is also available. To get your freepass see your travel agent or simply purchase it at any major Odakyu station. Also check out the info packed, English friendly Odakyu railway website. Driving is another options that most would warn against but if you are going to Hakone on a weekday that is not a holiday it can be a great way to be able to really get out and explore all the hidden wonders the mountains have to offer. It can also be the most economical way to travel if you are in a group of 4. If you divide a car rental fee by 4 it is often much cheaper than 4 train tickets. If you do decide to have a go at driving there are a couple necessities you will need: 1) An international driver's license or a Japanese driver's license 2) The Road Atlas Japan in English. (currently out of print) 3) Ask the rental agency for car navi. Even if it isn't in English, knowing exactly where you are on the map is priceless.
